7 Steps To Build The Ultimate Garage

 (modified Jan 20, 2023)

Building The Ultimate Garage

If you only use your garage for parking your car, you’re not using it to its full potential. You could spend thousands on a total garage remodel to get the maximum use from this space, but there also are plenty of DIY techniques that can accomplish the same goal. Here are seven steps to take to build the ultimate garage without spending a bundle.

Step 1: Envision Your Perfect Garage

Whether you’re a true gearhead who spends Sundays tuning up your car, an artist looking for a private studio, or a hobbyist in need of dedicated space, think about how you’d prefer to use your garage. Create a diagram to arrange everything you’ll need, and take measurements to ensure you’ll have room for it all.

Step 2: Clear Everything Out

To start with a blank slate, it’s necessary to first clear everything out. This is a good time to take stock of all items, and either sell or donate what you don’t need to make room for your dream layout.

Step 3: Think Storage

Cabinets, shelves and tool boxes will be essential for your ultimate garage. Not only will adding storage keep your items off the floor, but it also will help you stay organized. That way, you’ll spend more time doing what you want and less time rummaging through boxes looking for things.

Step 4: Power It Up

No matter how you want to use your garage, you’ll probably need power. Make sure the power outlets are in the right places for your needs. Call an electrician if you could use more outlets. If you’re going to work on your car or build furniture in the garage, for example, you may want to have 220V outlets installed to handle heavy-duty power tools.

Step 5: Don’t Forget Insulation

Spending more time in your garage means insulating it against the elements. Most garages are built with the bare minimum in terms of protection from the outdoors, so you may want to look into insulating the walls and ceiling.

Step 6: Finish Your Floor

If your updated garage will be a busy workplace, consider coating your floor with epoxy to protect it from spills and damage from dropped tools. If you want it to be softer or quieter, indoor/outdoor carpeting or foam-rubber mats can make a great surface for working out or for band practice.

Step 7: Create Your Workspace

Regardless of your garage’s intended purpose, you’ll probably need a dedicated workspace. Set up your desk or workbench where you’ll be most comfortable and have easy access to your tools and/or power outlets. Consider building a loft to create an isolated workspace with storage underneath.
